Today, we observed a new edition of CyberpowerPC’s Gamer Xtreme VR compatible machines in the 8020 series. We’ll look at the hardware details on the Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8020A4 Desktop Gaming PC in this review, as well as how it performs for people who may be interested in purchasing it.

If you don’t like the GXiVR8020A4’s design, you should know that it costs around the same and has almost similar hardware specs (save for an optical drive) as an older model (the GXiVR8020A3), which we evaluated before. The only difference we can detect between these two models is the case that CyberpowerPC has utilized, as well as the fact that the GXiVR8020A3 contains an optical drive, so be sure to check out the GXiVR8020A3 as well and select the one that you like.

CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A4 Overview

The Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8020A4 is a prebuilt gaming computer that comes with a mouse and keyboard, as well as a wireless USB adapter and the Windows 10 operating system. The only difference between this computer and CyberpowerPC’s previous iteration (the GXiVR8020A3) seems to be the casing, since the graphics card, CPU, storage, and RAM specs are all similar.

The RX 580 graphics card, which was introduced in April of this year, is a powerful card that can handle even the most demanding AAA games on high settings. The PC is also completely upgradeable in the future, although you won’t need to bother about performance enhancements for at least a few years with the current hardware.

Performance

We’ll go through each of the hardware components that come with the GXiVR8020A4 in detail below.

Processor

The GXiVR8020A4 uses the same CPU as the previous edition of this computer from CyberpowerPC. The i5-7400 is a quad-core Intel CPU from the current generation, with a base speed of 3.0GHz and a turbo boost to 3.5GHz. This is a rather new Intel CPU, having just been introduced in the first quarter of 2017. Because the GXiVR8020A4 is the next model up from the GXiVR8020A3, we’ll presume that CyberpowerPC did the same thing with the GXiVR8020A4 version and upgraded their hardware to be compatible with Kaby Lake architecture, which means you’ll get all of Intel’s newest technologies.

Graphics

In terms of graphics, we’re delighted to announce that CyberpowerPC hasn’t let us down with this design — you’ll receive an AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB graphics card from April 2017. AMD has been working on the RX line of graphics cards for quite some time, so you can be certain that the 580 will provide the kind of high-end performance you’d expect.

The RX 580 was introduced only a few months after the RX 480, and although it’s almost identical to the RX 480 (it utilizes the same graphics processing unit), AMD tweaked the hardware to increase performance by increasing clock rates and optimizing the hardware.

As a consequence, frame rates will be even greater than the prior RX 480 version (which was already a great card). The framerates you may anticipate with the RX 580 are shown below. It’s also worth mentioning that the i5-7400 CPU in the GXiVR8020A4 CyberpowerPC performs somewhat better than the i5-6500 utilized in the test scenarios below, so you may be able to anticipate even greater performance than what’s shown below.

 

Memory

You receive a total of 8 GB DDR4 RAM for system memory, which is enough for gaming rigs. DDR4 RAM has been widely used since Intel’s Skylake architecture was released, and it remains the top-of-the-line standard for Kaby Lake.

The quantity of RAM sticks you’ll receive isn’t indicated in this build – we know that the RAM configuration in the GXiVR8020A3 variant was 2 x 4GB sticks. It’s worth mentioning that CyberpowerPC is renowned for not guaranteeing any certain brand (or configuration) of RAM, since the make and models available fluctuate depending on components availability.

Most people won’t have a problem with this, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re particular about the brand or configuration of RAM you acquire. However, most motherboards offer up to four DIMM slots for RAM, so even if two of the slots are filled with the 8GB total RAM, you’ll still have two slots accessible for future RAM upgrades.

Storage

The GXiVR8020A4 comes with a 1 TB 7200RPM hard drive, which provides enough of room for your operating system, games, and other stuff. Unfortunately, this setup lacks a solid state drive, but if you’re accustomed to SSDs or just want a performance bump, it’s simple to add one later.

The hard drive’s specific brand/manufacturer information isn’t given, therefore we assume it will vary depending on availability. You may rest easy knowing that you’ll still receive a 1TB 7200RPM disk.

Motherboard

The motherboard used is not disclosed, as it is with most prebuilt PCs. The computer does, however, utilize an Intel B250 Express Chipset motherboard, and prior versions of the GXiVR8020A3 have been reported to use either the MSI Bazooka B250M or B270H chipset (and presumably the same motherboard is used in this build since all other components appear to be the same).  

Case

The only change between the GXiVR8020A4 version and the preceding GXiVR8020A3 revision is the casing.

CyberpowerPC utilized the MasterBox Lite 5 ATX Mid-Tower with red trim for the GXiVR8020A4 desktop gaming PC (the case itself offers configurable trim colors if purchased directly from Coolermaster, but we’re not sure whether these would be included with the CyberpowerPC offering).

Coolermaster makes fantastic cases, and this one is no exception – the ‘dark mirror’ front panel seems opaque in normal settings, but when the case fans are switched on, it reveals through the case fan illumination for a unique impact. There’s also an edge-to-edge clear glass side panel that lets you see all of your PC’s components. Finally, if you’re planning on upgrading in the future, it supports water cooling with up to four 120mm fans and graphics cards up to 16.14′′ (40cm) in length.

In addition, CyberpowerPC equipped the case with a read/write DVD drive and 802.11 AC Wi-Fi for cable-free internet access.

Usage

With the GXiVR8020A4, you’re getting solid, high-end hardware where it matters. The graphics card and CPU, for example, both have release dates in the first half of 2017, so you can be certain that you’ll get a decent useable life out of them for at least the next 5 years before you notice any performance slowdown.

Because this gaming machine has such a strong hardware base where it counts, it should be able to handle practically any AAA game you throw at it. It should be able to run virtually all games at high or maximum settings without causing any performance difficulties, and you should have at least 1-2 years of this before you need to start lowering your graphics choices as more demanding games are released in the future.

If you plan on using this computer for more resource-intensive applications like video editing, graphics-rendering, modeling, and the like, the 8GB of system RAM will probably be sufficient, and you won’t see much tangible benefit from adding more system memory. However, if you plan on using this computer for more resource-intensive applications like video editing, graphics-rendering, modeling, and the like, you might benefit from adding more RAM.

Because it can already perform more demanding activities like gaming, using this computer for daily applications will be a snap. However, because the GXiVR8020A4 only comes with a hard drive, you may want to consider upgrading a solid state drive for an even better user experience (which are noticeably slower than SSDs).

If you merely intend to use this computer for daily tasks like as accessing the internet, viewing photographs and videos, and using office software, it’s definitely overkill, and you’d be better off investing your money elsewhere. You may also find the red case fans and lights to be distracting (you can’t usually turn off the illumination while the fans are running). However, if you plan to utilize this PC for your daily requirements as well as some recreational or even serious gaming, this machine will serve you well.

You’ll need an adapter like the one below if you have display monitors that utilize VGA or DVI connector inputs (the RX 580 graphics card only has display port and HDMI outputs).

Gaming Capabilities

As previously stated, the GXiVR8020A4 will provide lag-free gaming for almost all game titles owing to the RX 580 and i5-7400 CPU options, both of which are higher-end hardware options.

In reality, you should be able to play almost any game at 1080p resolution without latency or stuttering, even on the highest settings. This will most likely be the case for the next several years before you need to start lowering the settings (as more demanding games start to be released).

Virtual Reality (VR) is a kind of virtual

The GXiVR8020A4 is being upgraded.

Let’s consider how the GXiVR8020A4 will stand up in the future, in case you decide to update it at some point. While you shouldn’t have to replace your computer anytime soon, it’s still important thinking about your alternatives since certain computers aren’t built to be upgraded.

When buying a computer that you want to enhance in the future, the most important thing to consider is whether it is a decent ‘foundation’ to begin with. This usually include checking the chassis, motherboard, and CPU for quality. This enables you to update additional components while maintaining the primary components for as long as feasible. The GXiVR8020A4 has a good casing and CPU, but we’re not sure about the motherboard since it’s not mentioned which one you’ll receive. If this is important to you, you should check with CyberpowerPC before purchasing. Regardless, here are some improvements you may want to think about now or in the future:

• Upgrade to a solid state drive (This will improve load/operation time immediately, particularly if your Operating System is installed on the SSD)
• Upgrade your RAM (only really necessary if you feel the 8GB RAM is holding you back)
• Upgraded power supply (optional)

This video demonstrates how to increase the RAM and install a solid state drive on the previous version (the GXiVR8020A2). There are a few variations between these versions (the GXiVR8020A4 has a different casing and a different graphics card), but the hardware should be similar for the most part — with the exception of the GXiVR8020A4’s absence of an optical drive. So, if this seems like something you’d want to accomplish, have a look.

 

Upgrade to an SSD

We strongly advise installing a solid state drive (SSD) if you have the additional cash or even if you already have one. Not only will you notice a significant reduction in loading times, but your computer will also start up much faster. I know from personal experience that going back to a sluggish hard drive after switching to SSD would be really aggravating, since the performance difference is significant.

With a 1 TB hard drive, the GXiVR8020A4 already has enough of storage, but you could simply add a tiny SSD for further performance. If you want to speed up your computer, you’ll gain the maximum advantage by reinstalling or cloning your Windows 10 Operating System (OS) as well as your most frequently used apps to the SSD. The slower 1 TB hard disk may then be utilized for less often used apps and file storage.

If you’re looking for a cheap but decent SSD, the Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB drive is suggested, while the Samsung 850 EVO series is advised for something a bit more expensive.

 

Other Upgrades in the Future

It’s useful to have some understanding of the gear you’re obtaining and its capabilities when thinking about future upgrades. While you generally don’t need to worry about upgrading right now, in a few years you could be considering items like:

• Upgrade your graphics card (though the RX 580 will certainly still be relevant for at least a few years)
• Upgrade to overclocking (not really required at this point in time as the Core i5-7400 processor is still very new and benchmarks quite well)

Neither of these are absolutely required right now or in the near future, but they are useful to keep in mind for anybody who likes to plan ahead and stay on top of emerging technologies. You’ll also need to consider power supply improvements and investigate your gear at that time to ensure it’s acceptable for your planned use.

Upgraded Power Supply

One last piece of advise for the GXiVR8020A4 is to be aware of its power supply. Typically, there are just two major reasons to improve a power supply:

1. If your current power source isn’t enough for your gear (e.g. you have a 300W power supply but your components might require a minimum of a 600W power supply).
2. If your current power supply is of dubious quality (for example, if it was made by a low-grade manufacturer or if its standards aren’t up to par).

Not everyone realizes it, but a low-quality power supply may cause harm to your computer hardware, particularly because lower-cost/lower-quality supplies are more likely to fail to provide components with a clean power signal within specified limitations.

Because of reason #2, you may want to investigate upgrading the power supply on the GXiVR8020A4. We don’t know for sure, but we’ve heard that CyberpowerPC sometimes scrimps on the quality of the power supply they give, which might lead to difficulties down the line.

There’s no need to be concerned, and it’s not a deal-breaker, but we suggest conducting some research into the specific brand or make of power supply that your CyberpowerPC comes with, to see if anybody has had any previous troubles.

If anything seems to be suspect, you should replace your power supply with a higher-quality one. We don’t hesitate to suggest EVGA power supplies since they come with a three-year guarantee and are 80+ certified. For this PC, the 600BQ model is a suitable choice.

On prior builds, CyberpowerPC’s support staff has said that “The brand may change depending on availability,” which suggests that although they are now using the MSI Bazooka, it might be a different spec motherboard in the future. Summary

This setup provides excellent value for money, since you get a gaming PC with high-end performance at a price that we can’t match with a DIY build. If you like the features on this machine, go for the GXiVR8020A3 or GXiVR8020A4, since both look to have the identical hardware characteristics and price tag. It’s simply the case that’s different, so choose the one that appeals to you the most.

This PC can handle practically every AAA game title you throw at it on high or even max settings thanks to its strong i5-7400 CPU and high-end RX 580 graphics card.

There are a few things to keep in mind, such as the lack of a solid state drive, the lack of an optical drive, and the possibility of a lower-quality power supply, but in general, the processor/graphics card combo on this prebuilt offers excellent value for money, and when you combine that with the fact that it comes with a Windows 10 operating system and even peripheral keyboard and mouse, you’re looking at a price that can’t be beat.

The GXiVR8020A4 is a good foundation mid/high-range computer to start with for any serious gamer, whether you’re looking for a gaming computer that’s ready to go out of the box or one you can enhance in the future.
